Breakfast in Akwaba Lodge
View (from property/room) in Akwaba Lodge
Akwaba lodge is located at the middle of Isla Solarte about a 10 minute boat ride ($10/person) from Bocas del Toro. It is on a hill overlooking the water and Isla Bastimentos Breakfast is included in your stay. Lunch dinner and beverages are available at a very reasonable price. The lodge is an eco style lodge surrounded by jungle. Though there are no hiking trails through the jungle you are serenaded by the sounds of birds. Kayaks, SUP and snorkeling equipment is available for your use. Your host and their children are wonderful and will do anything to make your stay a pleasant and wonderful experience. Things to know, the lodge is off the grid with good WiFi and does not have AC, but we were comfortable with our open windows and ceiling fan. The lodge accepts credit cards, but tours and water taxis are cash only so bring US dollars. Side trips to Red Frog Beach and Green Acres Chocolate are a must. Pack insect repellent and anti-itch cream.

Everything was perfect. The owners and the staff were super friendly and nice, the place itself is surrounded by paradise, there's also a backyard jungle. The food is delightful (if you're visiting - definitely book a dinner as well). Besides the amazing nature we also saw a lot of different animals including sloths, dolphins, tropical birds.. you can use kayaks for free and go explore the surroundings by yourself. The water is super clear, you can see starfish, small rayfish, even a small tiburon (a vegetarian one - no worries). I wish we could have stayed longer. Definitely miss this amazing place already! PS - there are small small mosquitoes called chitras. Make sure to be prepared for those.

We stayed in the Jungle lodge house, which is in a perfect location, a little further away from the main building. We enjoyed sitting outside on the porch early in the morning with a cup of coffee and watching the water and a beautiful nature around. Sunrise and sunset at Akwaba lodge are amazing! Natali and JC are wonderful hosts - very attentive and ready to help at any moment. We also enjoyed evenings and dinners: great atmosphere, excellent cocktails and food (special thank you to a great chef Rodger), music and delicious desserts. We had a wonderful time at Akwaba lodge. Thank you!

Natalie and Jean-Christian were really lovely hosts in their little bit of paradise. If you are looking for peace, tranquility and nature this is a great place to stay and get away from it all - tiny hummingbirds, parrots, star fish and dolphins were bonuses. No beach but visit to red frog island had a wonderful sandy beach. Nathalie organised a tour to other islands which I would highly recommend. Sadly too rough for paddle boarding while we were there but I can imagine this would be amazing on a calm day. And finally - The suppers were delicious!

We enjoyed our stay at Akwaba. The location is quiet and remote and we thought the food at the restaurant and the welcomng family that own the place were friendly. We personally struggled without airconditioning (which we obviously knew about prior to booking) as our room got super warm without much wind about. Make sure you pack your insect repellent too, as the midges/sandflies at dusk especially are brutal. We loved spending time in the hammocks down on the jetty and free use of stand-up paddle boards and kayaks was great. Recommend.
